Babel

Babel es una obra de teatro que narra la historia de amor y desengaño de dos parejas. Escrita por el autor australiano Andrew Bovell llega a España de la mano de la gran directora de teatro Tamzin Townsend. En su reparto cuenta con cuatro grandes actores del panorama teatral español como son Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Jorge Bosch, Pilar Castro y Francesc Albiol.

La internacional actriz Aitana Sánchez-Gijón explica a continuación qué es Babel y sus proyectos de futuro.

• ¿Qué es Babel?

Babel es la traducción del título de esta obra que se llama en realidad Speaking in tongues, ya que es de un autor australiano que vendría a significar “hablar en lenguas”. Como esta expresión no se usa en castellano es más reconocible el título de Babel, haciendo referencia a la bíblica torre y a su incomprensión de lenguas, que refleja el espíritu de la obra.

• ¿Se puede aplicar el mensaje de la obra a la sociedad actual?

Sí, el autor la escribió hace diez o doce años y no han cambiado tanto las cosas en estos años. Habla en definitiva de problemas de comunicación entre personas, en este caso parejas, que llevan muchos años juntos y que tienen insatisfacciones que arrastran desde hace tiempo y de cómo a veces anhelamos algo y sin darnos cuenta lo tenemos al lado.

• Interpretas dos personajes en la obra pero no es la primera vez que lo haces…

Interpreto a dos personajes y hace un año y pico interpreté tres en una obra que hicimos en Madrid, y la verdad es que es muy estimulante. Te obliga a cambiar de registro muy rápidamente. Lo curioso es que el autor de esta obra especifica que está escrita para cuatro actores y nueve personajes, no es que por el tema de los recortes hayamos querido hacer un reparto más pequeño, sino que el autor lo decidió así.

• Además estás trabajando para hacer una obra de Mario Vargas Llosa en abril, La Chunga.

Exacto, voy a estrenar La Chunga en el Teatro Español desde finales de abril hasta mediadios de junio.

• La protagonista de esta obra tiene que ocultar su belleza por el mundo en el que se encuentra inmersa ¿crees que esto puede pasarle a las mujeres en la actualidad?

En este caso yo creo que es casi lo opuesto, es un culto a la belleza exagerado y se le exige a las mujeres que mantengan su juventud y su belleza impecable como si tuvieran veinte años toda la vida. Así que digamos que es todo  lo contrario.

• Y también estrenas una serie de televisión. Cuéntanos un poco para que nuestros telespectadores puedan disfrutar de ella.

La serie será para Antena 3 y se llamará Galerías Velvet y es todo lo que ocurre a una serie de personajes en unos grandes almacenes en los años sesenta.

• ¿Qué crees que es más rentable con los tiempos que corren para un actor: cine, teatro, televisión…?

Ahora mismo esta profesión no se la recomiendo a nadie… como tantas otras, por otro lado. Pero están cerrando todas las ventanas y todas las puertas de salida y si ya históricamente los actores se han dedicado a poner copas y se han dedicado a otras cosas ahora cada vez más.

• ¿Vas a aprovechar estos días para visitar un poco la ciudad?

Claro, es un placer siempre venir a Sevilla con este tiempo y pasearemos mucho.

Babel is a play that talks about love story of two couples. It was written by an Australian author, Andrew Bovell, and it’s arrived in Spain from the hand of the great theater director Tamzin Townsend. In his division has four great players from Spanish theater witch are Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Jorge Bosch, Pilar Castro and Francesc Albiol.

The international actress Aitana Sanchez-Gijon explains what Babel means and her future projects.

• What is Babel?

Babel is the translation of this production’s title witch is actually called Speaking in tongues, because it was made by an Australian author. As this term is not used in Spanish, Babel is more recognizable referring to the biblical Tower and his misunderstanding of languages, that reflect the spirit of this work.

• Can we apply the message of this production to the society?

Yes, the author wrote it ten or twelve years ago and the things have not changed too much over the years. It talks about communication problems between people, in this case between couples, who have spent many years together and have dissatisfactions for a years and how sometimes we crave something and not realize that we have next.

• You play two characters in the performance but this is not the first time you do it …

I play two characters and a year or so ago I played three in a work that we did in Madrid, and the truth is that it is very stimulating. It forces you to change very quickly the tune. The funny thing is that the author of this book states that it is written for four actors and nine characters, we don’t do it in that way because we havn’t got enough money.

• Furthermore you’re working to make a work write by Mario Vargas Llosa in April, La Chunga.

Exactly, I will premiere La Chunga at the Spanish Teatro from late April to June.

• The principal character  of this work has to hide her beauty because of the world in which it is immersed. Do you think this things can happen to women today?

In this case I think it’s almost the opposite, we live in an exaggerated cult of beauty and is it required for women to maintain their youth and flawless beauty as when they had twenty years old lifetime. So let’s say that it is the opposite.

• And also you are wearing a new television series. Tell us a bit so our viewers can enjoy it.

The series is made by Antena 3 channel and it’s called Belvet galleries and the argument it’s about everything that happens to the characters in a department store in the sixties.

• What do you think is more profitable in that times for an actor: film, theater, television …?

Right now this profession is not recommend it to anyone … like many others, on the other hand. But they’re closing all the windows and all exit doors and if historically actors have engaged in putting cups and are dedicated to other things now this is increasingly.

• Are you going to use these days to visit a little the town of Seville?

Sure, it’s always a pleasure to come to Seville with this faboulous weather and we will walk a lot.
